Everything organic including fresh breads and coffee and many types of local fruits and vegetables.
Side of the Road!
All over the country you can find some of the freshest local food around, and almost always the best prices at the roadside stands. From homemade cheeses to fruits and veggies as well as the local snack-style foods. Theseitems are as fresh as you can get!
Local Organic Farms
Though there are not a lot of organic farms right now, the numbers are growing and the certification process is expanding. The farmers market as mentioned above, is a great place to get a sampling of organic products.
Culinary Tools of the trade
Costa Rica’s Mercado Central, or Central Market, is the largest marketplace in San Jose. Bordered by Avdas. Central and 1 and Cs. 6 and 8 Barrió La Merced San José.
Mercado Central is a real Costa Rican experience. I actually always manage to buy one or two things every time I go. From meat to local herbs and vegetables to banana leaves (great for cooking and decoration). Also lots of cheap And rustic kitchen supplies. A
real cultural trip.
Gourmet Food Stores
Centro Comercial Plaza del Río
Escazú, San José
A gourmet deli with lots if gourmet meats cheese and wines. A great lunch spot, awesome desserts. My favorite sandwich there is the Cubano. They do not have a website so here is their contact info:
Monday to Friday 10:00 am a 7:00 pm
Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Auto Mercado has several locations throughout Costa Rica, mostly in the larger cities. It is the top grocery store because of large range of quality products. Each store has items that are difficult (if not impossible) to find anywhere else in Costa Rica. Their fresh meats, breads and overflowing fuit/vegetable areas are impressive andtop quality. Some items that we've not found at many other stores are: Hummus, canned blueberries, fullselection of favorite cereals and much, much more. The locations open at this time are in San Jose metro area, Jaco, Tamarindo & Playas del Coco.
